What a Semax offer means

Start here A guidebook chapter

Can a pharmacy make Semax?

A prescription and a pharmacy name do not finish the question. The ingredient rules matter too.

Semax facts: September 30, 2026. Compounding rules: September 26, 2026.

First, what compounding means

Compounding is making a medicine to order, such as by mixing ingredients for a particular patient.

As of September 26, 2026, compounded medicines are not approved by the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA does not check each compounded product for quality, benefit or safety before it is marketed.

The raw ingredient has its own rules

Under the rules checked September 26, 2026, an ordinary compounding pharmacy cannot choose any raw drug ingredient it wants.

The law section called 503A covers medicine prepared on prescription for an identified patient, with other conditions applying, as checked September 26, 2026.

A bulk drug substance is the raw ingredient that provides the medicine’s effect.

For that ingredient, the pharmacist must check these possibilities in order:

  1. If an official ingredient quality standard exists, the ingredient must meet it.
  2. If that quality standard does not exist, the ingredient has to be in a medicine approved by the FDA.
  3. If neither applies, the ingredient must appear on the official 503A list of allowed raw ingredients.

The standard is a written set of quality requirements for that ingredient. Ask the pharmacist for the standard or list entry that applies to Semax.

Where Semax stands

As of September 30, 2026, Semax is not on the official 503A list of allowed raw ingredients.

It is also absent from the separate FDA group covered by a temporary policy on enforcement.

For that group, the FDA says it generally will not take action over use of an ingredient while it decides, if its conditions are met.

That is a pause in enforcement, not a statement that making the medicine is legal.

The FDA review also found no official ingredient quality standard for Semax and no FDA-approved medicine containing it.

As of September 2026, these rules do not allow a pharmacy to make Semax legally from its raw ingredient for a specific named patient.

This is this guide’s reading of the published rules and records. If a doctor or pharmacist offers it, ask them to name the rule that permits their proposal, in writing.

Keep this in mind.

Ask how the exact ingredient meets the compounding rule, as well as who would make the medicine.
